National Rescue Museum Dorus Rijkers
In the Rescue museum you will learn everything about the history of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij (KNRM) (Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution). You can experience here what it is like to sail a boat in a fog and the wind tunnel can create a wind force 10 that will nearly sweep you off your feet. You can also sail around the harbour of Den Helder in a real lifeboat.
A booming surf, stranded ships and called out lifeboats. Experience it all in the National Rescue museum Dorus Rijkers. The museum tells the story of the world of rescue in the Netherlands. You can find lifeboats, beach rescue vehicles and video in which the most dapper naval heroes of the old days explain about thrilling rescues. Find out for yourself what wind force 10 feels like in the wind tunnel and experience the rough sea in the sailing simulator. While in most museums you are not allowed to touch anything, here the visitors are permitted to touch much of the collection. You can turn the manually propelled searchlight and climb into a lifeboat.
